Creative Director
Department: Creative Team
The publication is seeking an artistic and highly organized person with an affinity for the arts and culture of the community it serves. You’ll lead the creative team, which includes an Art Director, Photo Director, photo editor and designers, and work closely with the editorial staff to develop and maintain the artistic design of the publication’s new online edition. You’ll also be a member of the leadership team, a collaborative leadership structure made up of team leads and long-time staff.
Requirements:
– Strong visual sense
– Highly organized and detail-oriented, with excellent verbal and written communication skills
– Enthusiasm for the publication’s subject matter, the magazine itself and its place in the community it serves
– Ability to communicate ideas visually and work creatively within limited budgets
– Ability to work as part of a larger team, including supervising editors, the director of photography, the art director and designers at all stages of content development
– Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and meet both short- and long-term deadlines
– Responsiveness and availability for communication
– Attend a monthly business/editorial meeting (1.5 hours)
– Attend a monthly leadership team meeting (1.5 hours)
General duties and responsibilities:
– Train and supervise the assigned staff of artists and production personnel; oversee their execution of all creative work so the team stays on strategy, budget and schedule
– Oversee all creative elements of the online publication, including:
– managing multiple deadlines
– assigning stories to editorial designers for layout
– overseeing workflow
– working with the Art Director and Director of Photography to assign artwork to illustrators and photographers
– Coordinate marketing communications design
– Oversee and manage the overall brand identity of the organization
– Maintain the design integrity of the publication
– Envision and develop new ways to engage readers
– Supervise the creative design team, including:
– scheduling and facilitating creative team meetings
– scheduling and facilitating team-building get-togethers and activities
– Liaise between creative and editorial, and between creative and the business side
– Assist with front-end development of the website
– Mentor junior designers
Knowledge and skills:
– Adobe suite, with a strong focus on InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop
– Google Docs and online file management
– Dropbox
– Quick to learn the programs the organization uses to project-manage stories and projects, such as Drupal, Trello and Slack
